Sea Turtles Dig The Dark!

Sea Turtles

Very soon sea turtles will emerge from the surf at night and lay their eggs on Daytona Beach. The incubation period is approximately 2 month and the little hatchlings make their entrance to the world and crawl to the ocean! There are many obstacles for these tiny creatures such a sand holes, predators, trash and other items left on the beach by beach goers.

It is also unfortunate that beachfront lights from residential properties along "The World's Most Famous Beach"  keeps female sea turtles from nesting in addition to confusing the hatchlings that are trying to get to the water and instead head towards the roads and drain storms!

The Volusia County Sea Turtle Habitat Conservation Plan is trying to help by educating beachfront residents so these threatened sea turtles can survive. Also, the county’s Environmental Management Division is working with beachfront property owners as well. Redirecting and/or shielding lights is an apparent educational goal in order for survival of these turtles.

The tips below were taken from an article on the Volusia County website  Residents and visitors can help save sea turtle lives by following these tips on the beach:

Do not touch or disturb turtles and their nests.
Do not disturb the dune system or plants. Use designated beach access points.
When driving at the beach, use the designated traffic lanes and parking areas. Beach driving access hours are from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. throughout the season, tide permitting.
Do not use flash photography or cellphones to light your way at night.
Use only red LED flashlights; they are less visible to turtles.
After a day at the beach, flatten sandcastles, fill in holes, and take your chairs and equipment with you.
Dispose of trash and recyclables in proper receptacles.
Do not use fireworks. They are prohibited on the beach at all times.
