Today starts the beginning of Fire Prevention Week in the Daytona Beach and Port Orange areas.

This years theme is "have two ways out" which focuses on the family fire escape plan.

According to Fire Inspector, David Newell, with the Daytona Beach Fire Dept."It is not only important to have an escape plan but to practice it".

Two local Port Orange ice cream parlors, Ritter’s Frozen Custard and Neighbors General Store are partnering with Port Orange Fire-Rescue for the 4th Annual “Great American Fire Drill”!

Families should bring their fire escape plans on Friday, October 15, from 6-8 p.m. to Neighbors General Store and Saturday, October 16, from 6-8 p.m. to Ritter’s Frozen Custard in exchange for a free ice cream or Italian ice.

Sparky the Fire Dog will be at each location every night to collect escape plans and hand out Fire Prevention Week
material.

This year the Port Orange Professional Firefighters Association is encouraging families to practice their escape plans during Fire Prevention Week.

A lucky student from each school will be selected after review of escape plans and win a ride to school on a fire engine!

There are sure to be events scheduled throughout the Daytona Beach and Port Orange areas during Fire Prevention Week so be sure to contact your local Fire Dept.
